In Home Puppy Training
This is such an exciting time and critical time in your new pups life. Getting things right from the start will help your pup develop into a wonderful companion and help to reduce or avoid many of the common problems people encounter.
To enable your puppy to be the best dog he or she can be there are some critical timelines to be aware of in their early development:
-
-
- Socialisation & mindful expsoure to people, objects, household items & noises by 12 weeks of age – The Most Urgent Priority
- Learning Bite Inhibition (soft mouth)- by 18 weeks of age – The Most Important Priority (people & dogs)
- Preventing Adolescent Problems—by five months of age – The Most Enjoyable Priority
-
In home puppy training is for people or their puppies that unable to attend a group puppy class, or in addition to attending class, & is specifically for puppies that are between 8 & 12 weeks of age.
Lessons are conducted in your home to ensure you get off to a great start in your puppy’s learning journey & can be undertaken as individual lessons targeted to specific needs or as a set of 4 lessons (see the overview below).
Puppy training overview
Our primary goal is to help you & your puppy grow & learn successfully together, helping your puppy feel safe, secure and well loved as they learn how to thrive in our modern world.
All training is based on positive reinforcement , helping your puppy develop confidence & resilience, with sessions conducted off lead (except when learning loose lead walking).
Being ‘free’ (not on lead) provides the ability for your puppy to choose whether or not they want to engage & the ability to say ‘no’, or ‘not just yet’ & helps you to begin to see what your puppy is trying to tell us which in turn helps to build a stronger relationship through mutual understanding & communication
Puppy training gives us the opportunity to introduce your puppy to lots of new things from foundation behaviours, new & novel objects, enrichment ideas, leads, harnesses and so on & this will be determined by you & your puppy’s needs.
Some of the things we may cover include:
-
-
- Introducing basic foundation skills & ‘your house rules’
- setting up a safe spaces or resting areas so your puppy can learn to relax & help them to get appropriate rest & sleep
- greeting people nicely (not jumping up),
- toilet training,
- appropriate chew toys,
- take it /thank you (learning to happily release items from their mouth, such as toys, food, shoes, clothes and so on & to avoid resource guarding of valued things),
- soft mouth (developing bite inhibition)
- enrichment strategies to stimulate their minds and bodies. this helps to fulfil their individual needs, build up self-directed activities & alone time & avoid ‘owner absent problems’ such as excessive barking, destruction etc
- introduction to loose-lead walking,
- body conditioning (familiarity with being touched, collar holds, putting on harnesses, collars & leads etc)
- ‘strange things’- introducing different surfaces, objects, on, off/over under etc which helps to build confidence & resilience,
- Learning with distractions
